What You Need to Get a Kansas ID
When my son turned 15, he couldn’t wait to get his driver’s permit. He had been studying the driver’s manual for weeks and was confident he would pass the test. But when we went to the DMV, we were surprised to learn that he needed more than just his learner’s permit to get a Kansas ID. He also needed proof of identity, proof of residency, and a parent or guardian to sign for him.
We were able to get everything we needed that day, but it would have been helpful to know what we needed to bring before we went. That’s why I’m sharing this information with you. If you’re planning to get a Kansas ID, here’s what you need to know.
Proof of Identity
You will need to provide one of the following documents as proof of identity:
- U.S. passport
- U.S. passport card
- U.S. military ID card
- Birth certificate issued by a U.S. state or territory
- Permanent resident card (green card)
- Certificate of naturalization
- Kansas driver’s license or ID card
Proof of Residency
You will need to provide two documents as proof of residency. One document must show your name and current address. The other document can be a bill, statement, or other document that shows your name and previous address.
Acceptable documents include:
- Utility bill
- Bank statement
- Credit card statement
- Lease agreement
- Mortgage statement
- Voter registration card
- Car registration
- Insurance card
Parent or Guardian Signature
If you are under 18 years old, you will need a parent or guardian to sign for you. The parent or guardian must be present at the DMV when you apply for your ID.
Fees
The fee for a Kansas ID is $25. You can pay by cash, check, or money order.
How to Apply
You can apply for a Kansas ID at any DMV office. You can also apply online. If you apply online, you will need to make an appointment to visit a DMV office to have your photo taken and to pick up your ID.
